5 Reasons Why You Should Get Married When You’re Fat

Before you jump over your internet connection and pummel me — hear me out. I don’t mean “fat” as in, “You are fat.” I mean “fat” as in YOUR PERSONAL version of fat. For some that means the extra five pounds you gained over winter. For others “fat” is when you can’t fit into your favorite jeans anymore – or – when you finally reach the bottom of your Costco barrel of cheese puffs.

The bottom line is: I don’t think you’re fat — but you probably do.

If this resonates with you, then read on. If not, please disregard everything I am about to say. Which is … trying to lose weight before your wedding is the worst idea ever, and here’s why:

5 Reasons Why You Should Get Married When You're Fat

1. THE STRESS
In case you hadn’t heard, wedding planning can be a bit stressful. Like, pee-on-a-stick-because-your-period-is-late-and-it’s-either-due-to-pregnancy-or-stress, stress. (Trust me, this can happen.) Adding more stress to your life is not a good idea at this time, and losing weight the healthy way takes a lot of extra patience, time and effort. If working out relaxes you, then by all means, do it! But don’t kill yourself in the gym just because if you don’t lose 10 pounds your maid of honor will be thinner than you. Stay healthy — not crazy.

2. THE DRESS
Some brides have an instant “love connection” with their dress. They’ve had it picked out for years, they dream about it, they take long moon-lit walks on the beach hand-in-sleeve with their dress. But then there’s brides like me. I didn’t experience any of those things. I picked a dress that I liked, that looked good on me, and then I thought “if this looks good now, it will look even BETTER when I lose ten pounds.” Then when the seamstress asked me if the dress was too snug (which it was), I said no. Oh. Dear. Lord. How. Foolish. I. Was.

Granted, the dress still looked good — from the front. But after 3 fittings, 4 pounds of last minute stress weight GAIN and a bottle of champagne (to dull the pain, obviously), my zipper popped about 30 minutes before the ceremony. If it wasn’t for one of my amazing bridesmaids (who sewed me into my dress) I would have had to get married in a Gwar t-shirt. Your dress needs you to be consistent. If you weigh 160 on the day of your last fitting, you need to make sure you weigh the same on your wedding day (plus or minus a couple).

3. THE MAN
Congratulations! You found an amazing man who wants to keep you around for the rest of his life! And he loves you at the size you are RIGHT NOW. Weight can be a very touchy subject in both healthy and not-so-healthy relationships, and this is not the time to pepper him with questions about what he “really” thinks about your body (is there EVER a time for that?). He’s going to marry you whether you spend an extra hour on the treadmill or not.

4. THE DEADLINE
If you don’t listen to anything I say, please hear me on this … trying to lose weight when there’s a deadline (your wedding day) can be VERY dangerous both mentally and physically. Some argue that using deadlines can be motivating, and it can. But these “weight checkpoint” deadlines don’t have hundreds of man hours and thousands, or tens of thousands, of dollars riding on them. The door for rash actions and dangerous habits can be opened when a bride has invested so much physical and mental energy into dieting and exercise, but hasn’t reached her goal — and only has 2 weeks left. You’re mental health is far more important than any wedding dress. Even a Vera Wang.

5. THE REBOUND
Whether in the form of a honeymoon or extra days off of work, in most cases a period of relaxation follows a wedding. And relaxing doesn’t usually involve avoiding your favorite foods like the plague or throwing in an extra Zumba class everyday. What does this mean? It means you should pack extra clothes in the size you were when you got engaged, because weight lost quickly is also weight gained quickly. This isn’t inevitable, but it does happen.

Oh, and one other thing — have you ever noticed how a bride ALWAYS looks beautiful? Seriously. Every. Single. Time. It’s because she found a partner that she loves so much she is willing to stand up and declare it in front of all the most important people in her life (and even a few cranky great-aunts). It is not because she weighs 120 pounds.

With all this said, I am not a doctor and am in no way condoning ignoring a healthy diet and exercise while you are in the midst of wedding planning. But, please take it from me, focus on your health NOT your weight and you will have an amazing wedding day.

We sure had a great week here at MarryThis! Here’s a summary of this week’s highlights:

Cater Your Own Wedding:
Fancy Croissant Sandwiches

Cater your own wedding: Fancy Croissant Sandwiches

Let’s keep it real for a second: Unless you plan on serving hot dogs, chips and twinkies, feeding 100 people ain’t cheap. And hiring a catering company ain’t cheap either (at least, not OUR version of cheap). So what’s a broke bride to do?

Cater your own wedding! Stop laughing. It’s really not THAT bad. With a small support group (that’s what bridesmaids are for!) and some smart planning, you can save MAJOR dough on your food and drink bill.

Enter our new “Cater Your Own Wedding” feature! In this series we’ll be sharing with you some awesome recipes that:

  • Are easy to prepare ahead of time
  • Will still be fresh after a day or two in the fridge
  • AND will save you oodles of cash

First up we have two beautiful artisan sandwich recipes that would be perfect for an informal picnic or brunch wedding. Our Steak with Brie & Sun Dried Tomatoes and Chicken Pesto Provolone sandwiches would even be great as hors d’oeuvres before a formal dinner (just quarter them and skewer with a fancy sandwich pick!). Plus, these sandwiches taste even BETTER after resting in the fridge overnight (or for a few days). No joke.

Best of all: For a guest list of 100 people, this menu item will only set you back $215. That’s only $1.43 each! Read on for the recipe and our budget breakdown!

Cater your own wedding: Fancy Croissant Sandwiches

Steak with Brie & Sun-dried Tomato Sandwich

Ingredients:
(Amounts are per sandwich)

  • Croissant, sliced horizontally
  • Tri-tip steak, grilled and thinly sliced – 1/4 pound
  • Canned, sliced sun-dried tomatoes packed in oil – 3 to 4 slices
  • Brie – 1 oz. (I used President brand)
  • Pre-washed, packaged spinach – 4 to 5 leaves
  • Mayo – 1 teaspoon

Instructions:
On the bottom half of the croissant, spread mayo and add sliced steak. Add sun-dried tomatoes. Top with spinach. Spread brie on top half. If the brie isn’t spreading easily, heat it up in the microwave. DO NOT walk away. Brie is already a very soft cheese and only needs about 5-10 seconds in the microwave to melt. Cut sandwiches in half and arrange on serving platter.

Chicken Pesto Provolone Sandwich

Ingredients:
(Amounts are per sandwich)

  • Croissant, sliced horizontally
  • Roasted chicken breast lunchmeat – 5 slices
  • Pesto (I used Buitoni)
  • Slice provolone
  • Mayo – 1 teaspoon
  • Pre-washed, packaged spinach – 4 to 5 leaves

Instructions:
On the bottom half of the croissant, spread mayo and add chicken breast. Top with spinach. Spread pesto on top half and add slice of provolone. Cut sandwiches in half and arrange on a serving platter.

I told you! Beautiful, tasty AND easy! Read on for the budget breakdown.

Cater your own wedding: Fancy Croissant Sandwiches

Cost Breakdown:

The figures below are based on making 150 sandwiches (75 sandwiches, halved) for  a guest list of 100 people. For 75 steak sandwiches and 75 chicken sandwiches:

  • Croissants: $50
  • Tri-tip steak: $63.75
  • Jar sun-dried tomatoes: $15
  • Brie: $18.75
  • Sliced chicken lunchmeat: $18.75
  • Pesto: $32.80
  • Sliced Provolone: $8.50
  • Spinach: $5
  • Mayo: $3
TOTAL: $215.55 for 150 sandwiches, $1.43 each!

I know that $215 can still seem a little steep for one dish, but remember that you are feeding a crowd! Catering bills can range between $15 – $20 PER PERSON and that doesn’t even include wait staff or tips. Add in a few tasty and cheap side dishes and you can EASILY save $1,000.

Still too pricey? Girl, we’ve all been there. Use these tips to save even MORE money!

  • Instead of buying pre-made pesto, make your own from fresh ingredients or use a pesto seasoning packet (just add oil and water).
  • Buy in bulk! Search for these items at Costo or Sam’s Club. If there isn’t a big box retailer in your area, many of these items are also available for bulk purchase online.
  • Use high-quality deli sliced roast beef instead of tri-tip steak. You’ll save big bucks AND you won’t have to grill and slice enough steak for 100 people.
  • Brie can be a little strong for non-cheese lovers, not to mention expensive. Swap for a milder, less expensive cheese like swiss or cream cheese.

Have you catered your own large event before? What advice do you have for a budget bride? What would you serve as a side? Or to drink? We’d love to hear your thoughts! Let us know in the comment section below!

Happy sandwiching!

Frugal favor: Homemade granola

granola favor

I often think of a post-wedding morning as one of sleeping in, pressing the snooze button several times, and rushing around to get checked out of the hotel on time after a late night of fun.

That’s where this granola wedding favor comes in. Your guests will love you for this healthy breakfast on the go, plus homemade granola is so easy to make. And when I mean easy to make, I mean Rice Krispies treats easy. Granola takes just a few ingredients, time in the oven and voilà — you’ve got a boatload of tasty and inexpensive toasted oats, nuts and dried fruits.

granola

Use this delish granola recipe from The Kitchen Sink. Granola is sort of like a cookie where you can add whatever you want and it never turns out badly, so choose your favorite dried fruits and nuts.

To make this favor: Fill each wax food bag with one cup of granola. Tie with a fun ribbon and our printable tag and you’re good to go.

A Wedding Setting:
Gentlemen Prefer Blondes

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes wedding inspiration board

Today I pay homage to one of my favorite movies of all time, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Whether you’re in the mood for a chick flick or a comedy, or just yearning for some eye candy, this movie has something for everyone.

The special relationship between best friends Lorelei and Dorothy reminds me of the special bond between the bride and maid of honor. Even though this wedding theme is a bit flashy for the average groom, if all else fails, it would be the PERFECT inspiration for your bachelorette party or bridal shower.

Out of all the movie stars to emulate as a bride, wouldn’t Marilyn Monroe just be the perfect fit? She’s the perfect combination of gorgeous, hyper feminine and slightly mysterious. Her iconic “Hollywood meets girl next door” style would be perfect for your wedding day.

6 Tips for Booking Live Wedding Music

I should start this post by telling you all that I am biased. I am a big, biased biatch. Why? Because to me, there is NO comparison between live music and a DJ. None. Now, with that said, I do realize that live music might not always be a priority for a budget bride. I, like many of you, was a little worried about spending upwards of $1,500 on live music. I thought: “Will it even make a difference?” The answer is yes. Specifically, HELL to the YES!

Booking Live Music

If you still need a little convincing, here are a few reasons why a live band is SO worth the extra money.

They’re Professionals
One of the best gifts a bride can receive during wedding planning is help. By hiring a live band you won’t have to worry about setting up and tearing down sound equipment, assigning a friend as an MC, or building your own music library.

You Get Dinner and a Show
Unfortunately, it’s just a fact that not everyone at your wedding will be social. For your shy friends and family, hiring a live band is a wonderful way to keep them entertained and keep the “awkward silence” to a minimum. Unlike DJs (with the exception of this one), live bands provide great music AND a show!

Live Music Sets the Tone
Yeah, I’m sure our wedding guests loved to see my husband and I vow our undying love for each other, blah blah blah … but to this day, the number one compliment I get about my own wedding was how great the band was. Unlike the food or your centerpieces, your guests will actually remember the band … and isn’t that what it’s all about? Creating a night that your friends and family will remember forever?

Now that you’re convinced, read on for …

6 tips for booking live wedding music

6 Tips for Booking Live Wedding Music

1. ALWAYS SEE THEM LIVE
Most bands worth their salt will have more gigs than just weddings. Taking the extra time to see your wedding band live BEFORE booking them is a very worthy investment. If you’re preferred band doesn’t have other gigs, ask to see if you can sit in on one of their practices, or arrange for an audition.

2. PICK A GENRE
Choose a band with a memorable and specific sound. In general, bands that cover all genres of music are also pretty mediocre at all genres of music. A band with a specific niche will have spent their time studying a smaller range of songs and will be much more practiced and talented in the long run. GigMasters is a great website to find live music available for hire in your area.

3. BOOK THE BAND & YOUR VENUE AT THE SAME TIME
Because some venues aren’t equipped to handle sound equipment or stage lighting, it’s important to shop for bands and venues at the same time. You’re wedding date isn’t set in stone until you book the venue so make sure to check availability with your band before hand.

4. CONTRACTS ARE YOUR FRIEND
Don’t hire any band that doesn’t ask you to sign a contract! Contracts can seem a little intimidating, but they actually protect YOU just as much as the talent. Without a contract, what’s to stop your band from canceling just because it’s Shark Week? Signing a contract commits you AND the band. Be very specific about your expectations and make sure any additional services you request (an extra hour of music, etc.) are included in the contract.

5. SCHEDULE SOUND CHECKS
Nobody wants to walk into a beautiful wedding to be met with a screeching electric guitar and speaker feedback. Coordinate with your band to make sure their sound checks are completed by the time your guests arrive.

6. COVER ALL YOUR BASES
Here are some other questions to ask your wedding band:

  • How many hours does your price include?
  • Do you have a song list to choose from? Can guests make requests?
  • How many breaks will you take?
  • What is your cancellation policy?
  • Will you book other events on the day of our wedding?
  • What do you normally wear to a wedding? Can we make wardrobe requests?

Follow these easy tips and you’ll be a booking pro in no time. Most importantly, make sure you love your band. After all, you’re asking them to share in one of the most important days in your life!

Why Pinterest Saves Bloggers Like Me
Thousands in Therapy

You know, normally I don’t post on Saturdays, but I just feel soooo damn good today that I couldn’t resist. And it’s all because of Pinterest. A web entity that seems like it was plucked from heaven as a gift specifically for the visual-thinkers and graphic designers of the world. It’s like my porn. If I could stash it under my mattress for shame that my parents would find out, I would. I love it THAT much.

Because here’s the thing: It’s hard to start a blog. The beginning is rough. You’re still finding your voice, trying to decide what makes you different from the other BAZILLION blogs out there. In the beginning you have nothing but passion and an extra non-paying, full-time job to show for it. You dream of being able to make a living by blogging about what you love. MarryThis is only a year old, a lil’ babe.

And yet there are already haters, copy cats and non-believers. And the only people who really believe that you could make a living blogging is yourself, a handful of close friends, a family who is already genetically pre-determined to believe in you, and the most gorgeous man to walk this earth, my husband. And I like to start sentences with “And.” Get over it.

Stay with me, I’m coming full circle here …

Why Pinterest Saves Bloggers Thousands in Therapy

Then you wake up on a beautiful Saturday morning with a long to-do list of awesome DIYs and printables and you think to yourself, “Maybe I should just quit and have normal weekends like the rest of the non-bloggers.” And then, in your agitated state, you log on to Pinterest and what is waiting for you? A list of beautiful little re-pins about how awesome your blog is.

Did you know that you can search to see what people have pinned from your site? And did you know that they ALWAYS say nice things about those pins? And did you know that I will save thousands on therapy just because of the confidence boost that I get from Pinterest?

I know that after a few hours of time-wasting with bad reality TV and a chocolate Costco muffin the size of my hand, I would have eventually gotten over that feeling of “just quit.” I love MarryThis! too much to leave it behind. But nevertheless, today I want to pay a little gratitude to Pinterest, and and even MORE gratitude to Karley Wyss, who practically pinned every single one of our free printables, and left kind little comments on each one of them. My particular favorite being, “These (cake pops) are supposed to be for St. Patty’s but they could also be used for school colors … you can even change the initials, well done MarryThis!, well done.”

Confidence restored. More ass-kicking blogging to come.
